I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to protect state election infrastructure and voting rights in response to the FBI's unprecedented raid on the Fulton County Election Hub and Operations center in Georgia this week.
On Wednesday, federal agents executed a search warrant to seize 2020 election ballots, tabulator tapes, digital data, and voter rolls from Fulton County. This raid occurred more than five years after the 2020 election, which has already been extensively counted, recounted, and investigated with no evidence of fraud found. Rick Hasen, a law professor at UCLA, stated he has never seen a search warrant of this nature and warned that the idea of federal officials seizing ballots to prove nonexistent fraud is especially dangerous.
What makes this situation even more alarming is the presence of US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard at the elections center. Senator Mark Warner of Virginia noted this was wholly unprecedented, as her role focuses on foreign national security threats, not domestic election administration. Her presence suggests either a violation of legal obligations to inform intelligence committees or an inappropriate injection of the intelligence community into domestic political matters.
Derek Clinger, senior counsel at the State Democracy Research Initiative at the University of Wisconsin Law School, characterized this as a dramatic escalation in efforts to expand federal control over historically state-run election infrastructure. Fulton County Commissioner Mo Ivory warned this is just the beginning and that similar operations will likely spread to other counties and states.
I urge you to publicly condemn this federal overreach, introduce or support legislation that protects state election materials from politically motivated seizures, and ensure that the 2026 midterm elections can proceed without federal interference. Our democracy depends on the integrity and independence of state-run elections. Please act now to defend these fundamental principles.
