No to Age Verification Laws

To: Gov. Pritzker, Sen. Syverson, Rep. Keicher

From: A constituent in Geneva, IL

March 30

I do not support age verification laws on phones, PCs, any device, nor any operating system, nor use of an ISP, nor the majority of websites. That being said, age verification for certain apps and websites could be fine as long as it doesn’t go too far. Porn sites, fine. Social media, like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, SnapChat, Twitter, etc. Also fine. But do it right. If you’re gonna just allow a pop up that says “put in your birth date”, (like on current alcohol websites), don’t bother. Kids have credit cards, so don’t bother with that either. They can also steal their parent’s credit card just to verify. (And if your answer to that is “well, parents need to parent”, then ok, let them parent the whole thing then.) But under no circumstance, should you put any law into place that makes people have to verify their age just to use their phone or computer or devices. That goes way too far. And if you’re writing this new bill (Children’s Social Media Safety Act) with the help of social media sites like Meta, you really need to think again. They can not be trusted with how our data is to be used.
