Iowa Must Stop the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB)
To: Rep. Nunn
From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA
July 3
As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to oppose the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” (OBBB). Despite misleading claims made by some Senators, this bill would do significant harm to working families, increase our national debt, and gut essential programs like Medicaid. The people of Iowa deserve facts — not spin — and responsible governance that puts truth before politics.
Here are just a few reasons why this bill must be rejected:
• It adds $3.4 trillion to the federal deficit. The claim that it reduces the deficit by $400 billion is cherry-picked and ignores the Congressional Budget Office's (CBO) full projection.
• It extends tax cuts that were designed to expire, not prevent a “tax hike.” The idea of a historic tax increase is a distortion of basic budget policy.
• The supposed $2,063 tax hike on the average Iowan is baseless. No official IRS or CBO data supports this figure. It’s a political talking point, not a fact.
• Medicaid is weakened — not strengthened. New work requirements and red tape will kick millions of low-income Americans off the program, including Iowans who rely on it for basic health care.
• False claims about undocumented immigrants abusing Medicare are being used to distract and divide. These individuals are not eligible for Medicare or ACA subsidies under current law.
• Claims about “no taxes on tips or overtime” are misleading. Only certain workers qualify, and the exemption phases out quickly.
• The claim of $1.1 trillion in Medicaid fraud is deceptive. That number includes clerical errors and overpayments — not verified criminal fraud.
This bill is not what Iowa needs. It’s fiscally irresponsible, socially damaging, and built on distortions that insult the intelligence of your constituents. I urge you to reject it outright and stand for fiscal honesty and health care access.
I’ll be watching your vote closely — and so will many others in our district. Please make the right choice. Vote NO on the OBBB.
