An Open Letter

The proposal to provide $10,000 education savings accounts for families to use on private or home schooling raises significant concerns about diverting crucial funds away from the public school system. Public schools serve the vast majority of Texas students and rely on those tax dollars to operate effectively. Allowing that money to be redirected to private institutions, which are not bound by the same accountability and accessibility standards, threatens to undermine the quality of education for those who remain in public schools. While promoting school choice is a noble goal, doing so at the expense of already underfunded public schools is counterproductive. Parents who choose private options can make that choice, but it should not come at a cost to the 5.5 million students relying on public education in our state. A more equitable approach would be to invest those funds into improving public schools for all students, rather than providing a financial incentive that advantages the few over the many. Our obligation is to ensure a quality education for every child, regardless of their family's resources or circumstances.
