Investigate ICE Detention Center Overpayments and Profiteering

To: Rep. Elfreth, Sen. Alsobrooks, Sen. Van Hollen

From: A constituent in Arnold, MD

February 20

I am writing to urge you to launch a comprehensive investigation into ICE detention center contracts and introduce legislation to prevent profiteering from these facilities at taxpayer expense. Recent reports indicate that ICE is significantly overpaying for detention centers, raising serious questions about who benefits from these inflated contracts. American taxpayers deserve transparency about where their money goes, particularly when it funds facilities that separate families and detain vulnerable people. The lack of oversight creates opportunities for corruption, potential money laundering, and exploitation of a system that should serve public safety, not private profit. I am requesting that you take three specific actions. First, initiate or support a thorough investigation into all ICE detention center contracts to identify instances of overpayment, determine which entities are profiting, and examine whether any foreign influence or improper financial arrangements exist. Second, demand full financial disclosure from all contractors operating these facilities, including ownership structures and payment records. Third, introduce or co-sponsor legislation that establishes strict oversight mechanisms for detention center contracts, caps profit margins, imposes criminal penalties for fraudulent billing or money laundering through these contracts, and requires regular audits of all facilities receiving federal funds. The American people should not be funding excessive profits for private contractors while essential services in our communities face budget cuts. If detention facilities are necessary for immigration enforcement, they must operate with complete financial transparency and accountability. Any contractor found to be overcharging taxpayers or engaging in illegal financial activities must face serious consequences, including contract termination and criminal prosecution. This issue demands immediate attention. I ask that you prioritize this investigation and legislative action to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure that immigration enforcement serves the public interest rather than private enrichment.
