Third, introduce or co-sponsor legislation that establishes strict oversight mechanisms for detention center contracts, caps profit margins, imposes criminal penalties for fraudulent billing or money laundering through these contracts, and requires regular audits of all facilities receiving federal funds. The American people should not be funding excessive profits for private contractors while essential services in our communities face budget cuts. If detention facilities are necessary for immigration enforcement, they must operate with complete financial transparency and accountability. Any contractor found to be overcharging taxpayers or engaging in illegal financial activities must face serious consequences, including contract termination and criminal prosecution. This issue demands immediate attention.
