I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I am concerned about the increased actions to discourage and remove international students from U.S. universities.
Having a welcoming attitude towards international students is in our best interests as a nation. It promotes an image of America as a place of learning, of advancement, and as a participant in the global conversations around important topics. As I see daily as a teacher in my own classroom, all students grow and learn when they get to engage with a variety of perspectives and backgrounds.
Additionally, these students brings billions of dollars in spending to our schools and the cities they are in. Once these students leave to pursue careers, they also are more likely to see America as a positive business partner in whatever field they enter.
Please speak up to keep our international students. Being part of our interconnected global community is a necessity in today's world in terms of economics, business, politics, and more. The more isolated and insulated we become, we only project a very different image of democracy and America into the world.
