It is concerning that H.R. 9495 would grant the Treasury Secretary overly broad authority to unilaterally terminate the tax-exempt status of nonprofit organizations based solely on an accusation of being linked to terrorism, without requiring substantive evidence to be provided. This unchecked power raises serious risks of potential abuse for political purposes to target advocacy groups, media outlets, service providers and others working on important human rights and social justice issues. Revoking an organization's tax-exempt status can be a crippling blow, and such a consequential decision should not be made without proper oversight, transparency and an opportunity for the nonprofit to respond to the allegations. I urge you to reject this bill, as its lack of due process protections could enable the silencing of legitimate dissent and vital voices in our society.
