Protect civil service integrity, reinstate improperly dismissed USAID personnel
To: Sen. Kennedy, Rep. Carter, Sen. Cassidy
From: A constituent in New Orleans, LA
January 31, 2025
It is deeply concerning to read reports of USAID officials being abruptly removed from their positions without due process. Firing government employees en masse, without proper justification or following established protocols, raises serious legal and constitutional issues. Our federal workforce has strict protections in place to prevent politically-motivated terminations and safeguard the nonpartisan nature of the civil service. Suspending senior career officials and terminating contractors at such a rapid pace threatens to cripple USAID's ability to effectively carry out its vital mission of providing humanitarian aid and promoting development around the world. This reckless action puts longstanding U.S. foreign policy goals and national security interests at risk. I urge you to immediately reinstate any improperly dismissed personnel and commit to upholding all laws and regulations governing the federal workforce. Attempting to bypass these rules is not only unethical but likely unconstitutional. We must protect the integrity and political independence of our public institutions and the dedicated professionals who staff them. Failing to do so undermines American democracy itself.
