Reject discriminatory House Joint Memorial 1, uphold marriage equality
To: Gov. Little, Sen. Toews
From: A constituent in Coeur D Alene, ID
January 30, 2025
Opposing discrimination against same-sex couples is a noble goal, but House Joint Memorial 1 seeks to undermine the Supreme Court's ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide. This memorial calls on the Court to reverse that decision and redefine marriage as solely between one man and one woman, which would reinstate legal discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals and families. While views on marriage differ, the Obergefell ruling protects the equal dignity and rights of same-sex couples under the Constitution. Reversing it would strip away hard-won civil liberties and relegate an entire group of citizens to second-class status once again based solely on who they love. This memorial perpetuates injustice rather than remedying it. The principles of equality, liberty, and respect for human rights demand opposition to House Joint Memorial 1. Enshrining discrimination in law has no place in a free society that values all its citizens equally. Instead, Idaho should embrace the diversity of its people and focus on uniting, not dividing, its residents. An attempt to roll back marriage equality does a disservice to the state and its values of fairness and justice for all.
