I am writing to express my strong opposition to the SAVE Act, currently under consideration in the House of Representatives. While I support efforts to maintain secure and fair elections, the provisions in the SAVE Act would impose unnecessary and harmful barriers to voter registration that could disenfranchise millions of eligible Americans.
Under current law, Americans are already required to verify their eligibility when registering to vote. The SAVE Act goes much further by mandating additional documentation—such as an “Enhanced Driver’s License” (only available in five states), a passport, or a birth certificate—which many Americans simply do not have easy access to. In fact, over 21 million citizens would be affected by this requirement.
These hurdles would disproportionately impact certain groups: people of color, young voters, elderly individuals, and married individuals who have changed their names. For example, a married person who changed their last name may not have a birth certificate with their current legal name, making compliance with this law more complicated and burdensome.
Even current registered voters could be affected. Anyone who updates their registration—for instance, by changing their address or political party—would have to produce this extra documentation all over again. This added red tape serves no clear purpose and undermines the fundamental right to vote.
The SAVE Act does not protect democracy—it threatens it by making it harder for eligible Americans to participate in the electoral process. I urge you to oppose this legislation and work instead to expand access to the ballot box while maintaining election integrity.
Thank you for your time and attention to this urgent matter. I look forward to seeing you stand up for the voting rights of all Americans
