UNACCEPTABLE: Defend the Rule of Law and Protect Federal Employees
To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt
From: A verified voter in Kansas City, MO
October 9
I am writing to express my outrage over this administration’s continued attacks on federal agencies, federal employees, and their labor rights. The Bureau of Prisons’ decision to terminate its union contracts again, just days after a federal judge ordered their reinstatement, is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about this administration’s respect for the rule of law. No administration is above the law, and court orders are not optional. When a federal agency responds to an unfavorable judicial ruling by taking substantially the same action under a different rationale, Congress must demand answers and accountability. I condemn Russell Vought, Scott Kupor, and this administration for their roles in advancing policies that weaken the federal workforce, undermine collective bargaining, and strip employees of established protections. Federal employees are public servants, not political pawns. They deserve due process, fair treatment, and meaningful workplace protections. Weakening their unions does not automatically make government more efficient. It risks creating an environment where arbitrary decisions and unfair treatment go unchecked. This situation is about more than union contracts. It is about whether government officials believe they must abide by judicial decisions, even when those decisions conflict with their political objectives. The Constitution establishes checks and balances for a reason. Congress cannot fulfill its responsibilities by remaining silent while the executive branch challenges those safeguards. I expect you to stand up for your constituents, defend federal employees, and uphold the rule of law. Specifically, I urge you to demand answers from the Bureau of Prisons, support congressional oversight of Russell Vought and Scott Kupor, and hold agency officials accountable when violations of court orders are established. You must also defend federal employees’ rights to fair treatment, due process, and lawful union representation. Your oath is to the Constitution, not to a president or a political party. Constituents deserve representatives who will defend that oath through meaningful action, not empty statements. If you believe in accountable government, demonstrate it. If you believe in the Constitution, defend it. Silence is not an acceptable response when the rule of law and the rights of federal employees are at stake. Please explain what specific actions you intend to take. I expect a substantive response addressing congressional oversight, agency accountability, and your commitment to protecting the rule of law.
