According to multiple eyewitness accounts and video footage, agents deployed tear gas without warning into a peaceful crowd of families and children in the Old Irving Park neighborhood. This reckless and disproportionate use of force not only disrupted a community celebration but also endangered innocent lives, including young children. The Department of Homeland Security’s justification—that agents faced a “hostile crowd”—has been widely contradicted by those present, and even a federal judge has condemned the actions, stating: “Kids dressed in Halloween costumes walking to a parade do not pose an immediate threat to the safety of a law enforcement officer.” This incident is not just a local tragedy—it is a national disgrace. It reflects a dangerous erosion of public trust in federal law enforcement and a blatant disregard for civil liberties and community safety. I urge you to take immediate action by: 1. Calling for a full congressional investigation into the incident and the broader conduct of Operation Midway Blitz. 2. Supporting legislation that limits the use of chemical agents in civilian settings, especially near children and during public events. 3. Demanding accountability from DHS leadership and ensuring that those responsible for this operation face consequences. Our communities deserve better.
