I wholeheartedly support efforts to ban stock trading by public officials in a position to influence decisions that can affect stock value. Nevertheless, I view Rep. Fitzpatrick's recent vote in favor of the Stop Insider Trading Act as shameful, partly for its failure to meaningfully limit stock trading and even more for its linkage to the vote suppression efforts of the SAVE Act. If Rep. Fitzpatrick truly wants to institute limits on insider trading, as he has stated, he should sign on to cosponsor H.R.6731, the Restore Trust in Government Act. Instead, he seems to have used his signature on the Stop Insider Trading Act as a figleaf to cover his support for voter suppression.
