Oppose Greenland Hostility

I am writing as a constituent to express serious concern about recent statements suggesting that the United States may coerce or threaten Denmark in order to acquire Greenland. Such actions would be morally wrong, strategically unsound, and deeply damaging to American national interests. Denmark is one of our most faithful allies. It is a founding member of NATO and fought alongside the United States in Afghanistan and Iraq. Danish soldiers shed blood for our shared security—men and women like Mark Peters, who lost both of his lower legs in Afghanistan, and more than forty Danes who never returned home. This is the clearest possible definition of allied solidarity. The United States already has extensive military access to Greenland under a longstanding defense agreement with Denmark, including the ability to construct and operate bases. Our legitimate Arctic security concerns are already addressed through cooperation. Threatening an ally to seize territory it has already made available to us is not strength—it is self-defeating. American power since World War II has rested on voluntary alliances, not coercion. NATO succeeded against the Soviet bloc precisely because it was an alliance of free nations, not an empire held together by force. History shows that empires are costly, unstable, and ultimately weaker than they appear. This approach also carries serious fiscal risks. Alienating allies while proposing massive increases in military spending will saddle future generations with enormous debt while making the country less secure. When we weaken alliances, we must pay far more to compensate for their loss. Most Americans oppose acquiring Greenland, and an overwhelming majority reject taking it by force. I urge you to use your office to oppose any threat or use of force against Denmark, reaffirm our commitment to NATO and allied sovereignty, and insist that U.S. security be pursued through diplomacy and cooperation rather than intimidation. America is strongest when it keeps faith with its friends.
