Oppose Trump's Unconstitutional Birthright Citizenship Plan

To: Rep. Carson, Sen. Banks, Sen. Young

From: A constituent in Indianapolis, IN

July 31

I oppose President Trump's plan to revoke birthright citizenship for children born in the United States to many immigrant parents. This draconian policy would strip fundamental constitutional rights from approximately 150,000 babies born annually, create a new underclass of noncitizen infants subject to detention and deportation, require invasive federal review of parents' immigration status in hospitals, render children stateless, and violate the 14th Amendment's guarantee of birthright citizenship. This vicious plan represents a radical departure from 157 years of American legal tradition and would install ICE agents in maternity wards, subject newborns to deportation proceedings, create a discriminatory caste system for citizenship, and cause immense harm to families and communities. The Supreme Court's unconscionable decision permitting the development of this plan does not make it legal or moral. Congress must pass legislation explicitly protecting birthright citizenship, defund any attempts to implement this unconstitutional policy, and hold hearings to examine the human rights implications. This policy would cause irreparable harm to innocent children and families. Oppose this assault on our Constitution and our values.
