March 16

In the early hours of 8th March, Israel targeted four oil depots and a petroleum logistics site in and around Tehran. The strikes sent thick black smoke into the sky over a city that more than 10 million people call home. The fires have since covered the city in soot, coating streets, buildings and homes in a dark layer of ash. Residents woke up with sore throats, burning eyes and heavy air that is difficult to breathe, as experts warn that the toxic pollution from the burning fuel could pose serious health risks for millions living in the capital. The fires have blanketed Tehran in soot and toxic pollution, contaminating land, water and the air across the city. Wildlife has already been found dead in surrounding areas, while homes, water treatment facilities and soil have been coated in oil residue and ash that could cause long-term damage to agriculture and drinking water. Dr. Shahram Kordasti, an Iranian living in the UK, warned that the toxic gases and fine particles released into the air can irritate the respiratory system, worsen asthma and existing heart and lung conditions, and increase the risk of certain cancers. The US and Israel’s war on Iran is not one of justice or liberation. It is an illegal war driven by the pursuit of regional control and financial gain. In just over one week, more than 1,255 Iranians have already been killed by the US and Israel. This illegal offensive must end. Support War Powers Resolutions and stop this war!
