An Open Letter

To: Rep. Anchía, Sen. Johnson, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Gov. Abbott

From: A constituent in Dallas, TX

August 21

I am writing to express my deep concern and disappointment regarding SB 12, SB 8, and the current redistricting plan under consideration. SB 12, which prevents schools from supporting transgender students in social transitioning, will not erase transgender identities. Instead, it risks worsening the already fragile mental health outcomes for transgender youth, who need support, affirmation, and safety in order to thrive. Restricting school staff from assisting students in this way denies them vital resources and may drive them further into isolation, depression, and hopelessness. Similarly, SB 8 raises serious concerns for the safety and dignity of all Texans. By targeting transgender individuals and creating conditions where people may be harassed or interrogated for not fitting traditional gender norms, this bill not only endangers transgender Texans but also puts cisgender individuals at risk of unjust scrutiny. Such laws do nothing to eliminate transgender identities—they only increase stigma, harm, and discrimination. In addition, I urge you to vote against or veto the current redistricting plan. Approximately 40% of Texans voted for Democratic candidates in the 2024 election, and yet our representation in government continues to be undermined. Fair representation is the foundation of a healthy democracy. Gerrymandered districts further erode public trust and silence the voices of millions of Texans. I strongly support you in using every tool available—including breaking quorum if necessary—to prevent harmful legislation from passing and to defend the rights and dignity of Texans. Protecting vulnerable youth, ensuring the safety of all people, and safeguarding fair representation are essential responsibilities of government. As one of your constituents, I implore you to consider the long-term consequences of these measures. I hope you will choose to oppose SB 12 and SB 8, reject the current redistricting plan, and use every means at your disposal to protect fairness, equality, and the well-being of Texans. Thank you for your time and for your service to our state.
