No to SB172
To: Rep. Jarrells
From: A constituent in Columbus, OH
July 28
I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to oppose Senate Bill 172. This legislation poses a serious threat to civil liberties and public trust, particularly within communities of color.
SB 172 expands law enforcement powers in ways that will almost certainly lead to increased racial profiling. It weakens the fundamental protections that ensure individuals are treated fairly and equally under the law. By undermining the right to due process, this bill puts Ohioans at greater risk of arbitrary enforcement and unchecked authority.
Many studies have shown that similar legislation leads to disproportionate targeting of Black and Brown individuals, deepening mistrust in law enforcement and increasing the potential for civil rights violations. Ohio should be working to strengthen community relationships and protect constitutional rights—not erode them.
As your constituent, I urge you to stand up for justice and equity by voting NO on SB 172. The people of Ohio deserve legislation that upholds due process, ensures accountability, and respects the dignity of all residents.
Thank you for your time and service to our district.
