I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor and support the Stop Corporations and High Earners from Avoiding Taxes and Enforce the Rules Strictly (Stop CHEATERS) Act.
Recent cuts to the IRS budget have made it easier for ultra-wealthy individuals and giant corporations to evade their tax obligations, leaving honest, middle-class taxpayers to foot the bill. This isn't just a matter of policy; it’s a matter of fundamental fairness. Law-abiding citizens pay what they owe every April, and it is unacceptable that those with armies of accountants can opt out of the system.
The Stop CHEATERS Act is a common-sense investment in our country. Economic analysis shows that for every $1 we invest in IRS enforcement for high-income earners, the federal government gains approximately $13 in revenue. By restoring the $83 billion in funding that was recently rescinded, we can:
1. Close the Tax Gap: Focus audits on complex, high-income tax evasion rather than on working families.
2. Modernize Technology: Replace decades-old IT systems so the IRS can catch sophisticated fraud and process middle-class refunds faster.
3. Reduce the Deficit: Generate an estimated $1 trillion in net revenue over the next decade without raising taxes on a single person who follows the law.
I ask that you stand on the side of honest taxpayers and support this legislation. It is time to ensure that the wealthiest among us pay their fair share to support the infrastructure, military, and services we all rely on.
