DEFEND TEXAS STUDENTS’ FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS

To: Sen. Huffman, Rep. DeAyala, Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick

From: A verified voter in Houston, TX

February 6

DEFEND TEXAS STUDENTS’ FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS We call on Governor Greg Abbott to stop threatening Texas students for exercising their First Amendment rights. Threats of arrest, cancellation of school events like prom, or punishment for peaceful walkouts against the killing of American citizens, illegal arrests, and deportations are unacceptable. Peaceful protest is not a crime. Civic engagement should not be met with intimidation. The First Amendment does not end at the schoolhouse door. Students have the right to express their views without fear of retaliation. WE DEMAND Publicly affirm students’ First Amendment rights. End threats of arrest or punishment for peaceful student protests. Ensure schools remain places of learning, not political intimidation. When young people speak out peacefully, they are practicing democracy. Texas should protect its students, not silence them. We stand with the kids of Texas. We stand for the Constitution. We will not be silent.
