Condemn President's unilateral bombing, assert congressional war powers

To: Pres. Trump

From: A constituent in Nashville, TN

June 23

The President's unilateral decision to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities without congressional approval is a flagrant violation of the Constitution and a gross abuse of executive power. By circumventing Congress' exclusive authority to declare war, the President has undermined the foundation of our democratic system of checks and balances. This strike was not in response to an imminent threat, but rather a preemptive act of aggression that will likely escalate tensions and provoke retaliation, needlessly endangering American lives. While the President claims to respect the Constitution, his actions demonstrate a disturbing disregard for its principles and the separation of powers. No individual, not even the Commander-in-Chief, has the unilateral right to commit acts of war against a sovereign nation without the consent of Congress. This reckless decision jeopardizes regional stability and our national security interests. As a co-equal branch of government, Congress must immediately assert its constitutional war powers authority. Failing to hold the President accountable would set a dangerous precedent, eroding the system of checks and balances so vital to preserving our democratic republic. Initiating impeachment proceedings is a necessary and proportional response to this egregious overreach of executive power. Decisive action must be taken to reaffirm Congress' role in matters of war and peace.
