Oppose Section 702 Reauthorization Without Major Reforms

To: Rep. Sherman, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Sherman Oaks, CA

May 1

I need you to vote against reauthorizing Section 702 of FISA unless it includes major reforms that protect Americans' privacy. Two years ago, this surveillance authority passed with bipartisan support despite its documented history of abuse. That cannot happen again. Section 702 allows warrantless backdoor surveillance of people in the United States and provides virtually no protection against targeting critics, activists, religious minorities, or communities of color. It actively chills free speech and freedom of association. The threat has only grown worse now that officials like Stephen Miller want to deploy AI to supercharge FISA surveillance, turning this into a tool for mass monitoring. Two specific loopholes must be closed before any reauthorization: the Backdoor Search Loophole and the Data Broker Loophole. Without these fixes, Section 702 remains a weapon against civil liberties rather than a legitimate counterterrorism tool. I expect you to demand these reforms and withhold your vote if they aren't included.
