Vote against any appropriation that allows the Justice Department to pay TotalEnergies nearly $1 billion in taxpayer funds to abandon offshore wind development. This is a bailout for a foreign fossil fuel company disguised as energy policy. TotalEnergies is walking away from two wind projects that could have generated more than 4 gigawatts of electricity for households and businesses along the East Coast, where energy prices are already spiking due to power shortages. Instead of addressing this crisis, the administration is paying the company to redirect funds toward an LNG export plant in Texas and oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. This will worsen our electricity deficit and drive up costs for families in mid-Atlantic states. The Interior Department may be negotiating similar deals with other companies holding more than $5 billion in offshore wind leases. If this becomes a pattern, we're looking at billions more in taxpayer-funded payouts to energy companies while our power grid struggles to meet demand from data centers and electrification. My tax dollars should fund clean energy development that lowers costs and strengthens the grid, not reward a French oil giant for abandoning renewable projects we desperately need.
