Support for Autism Data Privacy Protections in California

To: Gov. Newsom

From: A constituent in Long Beach, CA

May 9

I am expressing my support for Governor Pritzker’s executive order. This executive order protects the privacy of individuals on the autism spectrum. There have been disturbing rhetoric and proposals from RFK Jr. regarding the forced collection of genetic and medical data from autistic people. Pritzker’s order is needed for civil liberties and disability rights. This executive order is the first of its kind in the nation. It sends a powerful message: that autistic individuals deserve the same rights to privacy, dignity, and protection from discrimination as anyone else. It prohibits the involuntary collection or misuse of sensitive medical or genetic data tied to autism diagnoses. This move is especially important now, as misinformation and stigma about autism continue to influence public policy and campaign platforms in troubling ways. As a concerned constituent, I urge you to introduce or support legislation here in our state that mirrors the protections established in Illinois. We must ensure that Californians are shielded from any potential abuse of data, surveillance, or forced disclosure targeting autistic people or their families. This is not a partisan issue—it’s a human rights issue. Please stand with autistic individuals and their families by making privacy protection a legislative priority
