I urge you to reject S.4340. Major oil and gas companies spent decades studying climate change, recognizing the dangers, and choosing to mislead the public about the risks. Their executives funded campaigns that denied climate science, attacked researchers, and created doubt about well‑established facts. These companies continued to expand production while they understood that their products would intensify heat, storms, fires, and floods. They also collected an annual average of $30 billion in government subsidies for decades and reported billions in profit, all the while shifting the long‑term costs of climate damage onto taxpayers and communities.
S.4340 grants these companies sweeping legal immunity and blocks states, cities, Tribes, and individuals from holding them accountable in court. The bill protects corporations that misled the public and strips communities of their right to seek justice for climate‑driven harms. I want Congress to defend the public’s ability to pursue accountability and to ensure that companies that caused widespread damage face the consequences of their actions.
Please oppose S.4340 and protect the rights of the people you represent.
