Monday in the land of economic mismanagement. Will there be even more crazy tariffs? Or perhaps masterful art-of-the-deal magic making?
Ha. I jest. We’ve all seen the miscalculations and sheer WTF-are-we-doing methods used to calculate the current tariff chaos.
The Trump administration doesn’t have a clue. Only major lines of BS that they believe, if repeated often enough and loudly enough, we will begin to accept as truth.
But they’re in the big leagues now. Political rhetoric designed to persuade the guillable isn’t going to work in this situation. There are too many people who know exactly what’s going on and will not be fooled by economic nonsense presented as reality.
Stocks tumbled, marking the three-day wipeout in global equity value to about $9.5 trillion.
S&P 500 equity futures signaled a 3% loss and the VIX Index spiked above 50.
Europe’s Stoxx 600 tumbled 5%. Asia capped the worst day since 2008.
I don’t know what any of this means. But the rich guys do. And they’re not happy about any of it.
But here’s what I do know about…
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Sunday dismissed questions about the hit to Americans’ retirement savings as “a false narrative.”
“Americans who want to retire right now, the Americans who have put away for years in their savings account, I think they don’t look at the day-to-day fluctuations of what’s happening,” Bessent said on “Meet The Press.”
Truly oblivious. Or disingenuous. Probably both. But it must be nice to live in such a comfortable cocoon of security that the day-to-day job of simple financial survival doesn’t even compute.
No matter. The chickens may finally be coming home to roost for the GOP. The political mayhem used to get us into the mess Trump is creating for the world isn’t going to work to get us out of it.
And you’re about to find that out for yourselves. The man will never admit he’s wrong. He will never do what’s best for the country. He will never listen to advice. And he will never change his mind. He will only double down. And make more and worse decisions.
But keep on spinning losses as wins regardless. There are still a few suckers born every minute.
Will you remain one of them?
