I am writing out of concern about a false and dangerous narrative repeated by Republicans—that “people on the left” are killing conservatives in large numbers. The facts show otherwise, and continuing to push this story only fuels division and violence. Over the past decade, the majority of extremist violence in the United States has come from the right, not the left. White supremacists, anti-government extremists, and other far-right actors have been responsible for the bulk of politically motivated killings and attacks. Organizations that track extremist incidents consistently show that right-wing ideology accounts for more deaths and violent plots than any other category. When we do look at politically motivated shootings, the picture is clear: Most are not tied to left-wing ideology at all. Attacks inspired by far-right beliefs, white supremacy, or anti-government extremism have been far deadlier. Republicans often point to isolated cases of left-wing violence while ignoring the larger pattern of right-wing extremism. Polling also shows something disturbing: increasing acceptance of political violence among conservative voters. This is not abstract—it aligns with rhetoric from leaders who normalize aggression and paint opponents as enemies. That climate increases the risk of real violence. The claim that “the left is killing conservatives en masse” misleads the public in three ways: It hides the fact that most extremist attacks target ordinary civilians, not politicians. It blurs the line between angry rhetoric and actual killings. It excuses extremist violence on the right by shifting blame to the left. I urge you to take three steps: Support transparent reporting on politically motivated violence, broken down by ideology. Speak out against false claims that inflame fear and division. Promote policies that prevent violence—community intervention, mental health support, and gun safety—while recognizing where the real threat lies. We need honesty about political violence. When leaders exaggerate or misdirect blame, it damages trust and increases the risk of more bloodshed. As my representative, I ask you to confront these lies directly and help restore truth to our political discourse.
