Texas Gov. Abbott: End Unconstitutional National Guard Deployment Now!

To: Rep. Flores, Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Sen. Zaffirini

From: A verified voter in Austin, TX

October 7

I am shocked to read reports that you have already sent Texas National Guard troops into Illinois—reportedly 400 troops deployed to Chicago under White House direction. (Guardian, AP) That move is deeply irresponsible and undermines the constitutional limits on military power within the United States. The Guard is not a tool for political spectacle or federal showboating. This deployment violates fundamental norms. The Posse Comitatus Act prohibits military forces from engaging in civilian law enforcement, absent very narrow exceptions. Using Texans to police other states sets a precedent that turns the Guard into a political weapon, not a defender of our state. Courts have already ruled similar actions illegal, including Judge Breyer’s ruling against the Los Angeles deployment. You were elected to defend Texas, not to serve as a pawn in Trump’s power plays. I demand that you withdraw any support for this deployment immediately, recall Texas troops home, and publicly condemn federal overreach. Push back against Washington’s militarization of American cities. Stand for law, not tyranny.
