I’m writing as a dedicated educator at a California homeschool charter school that serves families seeking a more personalized and flexible education for their children. Our students often come to us after struggling in traditional settings. Here, they find support, encouragement, and a learning path that actually fits who they are. That’s why I’m deeply concerned about the impact of AB 84. While the bill may aim to increase accountability, several of its provisions would directly harm students who rely on schools like ours. AB 84 limits our ability to fund enrichment activities unless taught by credentialed staff. That might make sense in a large district, but for homeschool families, it means losing access to local art teachers, music instructors, language tutors, and other vital community educators. These resources are core to how we individualize learning and keep students engaged. The bill also increases oversight fees, which would reduce funds available for instructional materials, support services, and curriculum. In small programs like ours, where every dollar supports student learning, these cuts would be felt immediately. Additionally, requiring us to report financials using district-style formats adds complexity without increasing clarity. Our structure is fundamentally different, and these changes risk forcing small, adaptive programs to conform to a system that was never designed for them. AB 84, as written, risks unraveling a model that is working for thousands of families. Please help protect the flexible, student-centered education that gives our students the chance they deserve.
