Add transparency to Michigan Data Centers

To: Rep. Breen, Gov. Whitmer, Sen. Cavanagh

From: A constituent in Northville, MI

January 23

As your constituent, I implore you to take action against the Data Centers sprouting up all around Michigan which are polluting our communities and driving up energy prices with impunity. Data centers must pay their own energy bills instead of passing those costs onto citizens. I have also heard they are employing Modular Nuclear Reactors without any of the nearby communities knowledge in order to subvert the energy costs. Michigan is experiencing job shortages and increasing costs of living. Adding skyrocketing utility bills to the mix is untenable and will force many folks into dire situations that are entirely preventable. Further, we know these behemoths wreak havoc on local ecosystems and pollution levels as these companies make us all sick in addition to making us broke if we allow this to continue. We are the only freshwater peninsula in the United States. It’s about time we legislate to protect this special and necessary resource. Simply putting a cap on how much they’re allowed to pollute is not enough; they must be held to strict standards to not affect air, soil, or other environmental impacts whatsoever. And that rule cannot be altered by future administrations without a public vote. Data centers said they’d create jobs. They don’t. Certainly not enough to justify the additional costs and pollution they introduce to our communities. Please use the authority of your office to put a stop to this madness and prevent data centers from polluting our communities.
