Release ethics report on AG nominee Matt Gaetz expeditiously.
To: Rep. McGarvey
From: A constituent in Louisville, KY
November 15
I am writing to urge the House Ethics Committee to immediately release its report on the investigation into former Rep. Matt Gaetz. With Gaetz now nominated to be the next Attorney General, there is immense public interest and concern over the contents of this report. The American people deserve transparency regarding any potential misconduct or ethical violations by someone nominated for such a high position of public trust. While it is highly unusual for the committee to release findings on a former member, there is clear precedent, as evidenced by the 1987 release of the report on former Rep. William Boner after his resignation. Given the seriousness of the allegations against Gaetz, including potential sexual misconduct involving a minor and illicit drug use, releasing this report is crucial for informed consideration of his nomination by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Prominent voices from both parties, including Sen. John Cornyn, Sen. Kevin Cramer, and the incoming Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Dick Durbin have called for the report's disclosure. Hiding this investigation from public view would only further erode trust in our institutions and the ethical standards we expect from those in power. The sequence of Gaetz's abrupt resignation, coming just before the report's expected release, raises suspicions he is attempting to bury these findings. Failing to release this report would not only keep the American people in the dark, but could deprive the Senate of key information as it weighs whether Gaetz deserves confirmation to such a vital role. I urge the Ethics Committee to uphold its duty to transparency and make public the complete findings of its investigation into Matt Gaetz without delay. The integrity of one of our nation's highest offices is at stake.
