Block the Trump EPA's Repeal of Power Plant Emissions Rules

To: Sen. Padilla, Rep. Liccardo, Sen. Schiff

From: A verified voter in Saratoga, CA

September 14

Today I take pen in hand to write and ask you to support environmental lawsuits to block the Trump EPA's repeal of greenhouse gas emissions rules for coal and gas power plants. These protections prevent an estimated 30,000 deaths and save $275 billion every year they remain in effect. Gutting them isn't deregulation — it's a decision to let people die so utilities can avoid accountability. These fossil-fueled power plants already account for roughly one-quarter of the nation's total climate pollution. Rolling back these rules means more smog, mercury, lead, and fine particles lodging in people's lungs — disproportionately in low-income and majority Black and Hispanic communities. However, these pollutants find their way into all communities via drinking water and food. The Trump EPA's own claim that greenhouse gases "do not contribute significantly to dangerous pollution" contradicts decades of science and the agency's prior assessments. They’re just plain lying, and putting millions at risk. Courts will likely say they ate lying as well, but the damage done in the meantime is real. This repeal could also be written to block future administrations from ever regulating power plant emissions again. That's not energy policy — that's locking in pollution permanently. Use every legislative and legal tool available to stop this rule from taking effect. Thank you.
