I am writing to urge you to support the efforts of Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie to ensure the Department of Justice complies with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. This bipartisan legislation, signed into law in November, requires the DOJ to release documents from the Jeffrey Epstein trafficking case. The DOJ has failed to meet the December 19 deadline and has only released heavily redacted materials, violating both the law and the public trust.
The congressmen have requested that Judge Paul Engelmayer of the Southern District of New York appoint a special master or independent monitor to oversee DOJ compliance. Their concerns are well founded. The DOJ claims it is reviewing over 5 million pages, yet these figures are self-reported and internally inconsistent with prior representations. This raises reasonable suspicion that the department has overstated the scope of materials to portray compliance as unmanageable and delay disclosure indefinitely.
The DOJ's conduct represents a flagrant violation of mandatory disclosure obligations and has caused serious trauma to survivors of Epstein's trafficking operation. Additionally, the department has failed to comply with Section 3 of the act, which requires the attorney general to submit a report within 15 days identifying categories of records released and withheld, along with legal bases for all redactions. No such report has been provided.
Khanna stated that they offered for six months to meet with the Justice Department to facilitate proper document release, but the DOJ has refused cooperation. The people demand true justice, and no one is above the law. When the executive branch refuses to comply with legislation passed by Congress and signed by the president, judicial oversight becomes essential.
I urge you to publicly support the appointment of a special master or independent monitor to ensure full compliance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act. Survivors and the American public deserve transparency and accountability.
