Oppose Automated Traffic Enforcement
To: Rep. Uyterhoeven
From: A constituent in Somerville, MA
September 24
I urge opposition to any legislation permitting automated traffic enforcement systems, such as red light or speed cameras. These devices are primarily revenue generators that undermine due process and disproportionately impact lower-income communities. Rather than improving safety, they have been shown to increase rear-end collisions at intersections. Furthermore, they erode privacy and civil liberties by enabling pervasive government surveillance. Public funds would be better allocated towards proven traffic calming measures that directly address roadway design flaws contributing to crashes. Automated enforcement is an ineffective and unethical approach that should be rejected in favor of more equitable solutions focused on engineering safer streets for all road users.
