I am writing as a constituent to express my deep concern regarding recent remarks made by Andy Ogles in which he publicly stated that "homosexuality has no place in America." The statement drew criticism from members of both political parties and was later deleted after widespread backlash. Whether one is conservative, liberal, Republican, Democrat, religious, or nonreligious, elected officials have a responsibility to represent all Americans and uphold the principle that every citizen is entitled to equal dignity under the law. Statements that broadly exclude or demean Americans based on their sexual orientation undermine that responsibility. Political disagreements are part of democracy. Attacking entire groups of Americans for who they are is something different. When members of Congress engage in rhetoric that targets protected groups, it damages public trust and contributes to a climate of division and hostility. I am asking you to publicly denounce these remarks and make clear that such rhetoric is unacceptable from anyone serving in the United States Congress. I also urge congressional leadership to consider appropriate measures to address conduct that falls short of the standards expected of elected officials. Americans deserve representatives who focus on solving problems, strengthening communities, and protecting constitutional rights—not promoting exclusion and hostility toward fellow citizens. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.
