As a former educator and administrator, and currently serving as a school committee member, I am writing to urge your strong support for H.3594/S.2328: An Act Regarding Free Expression. Book bans and censorship have no place in Massachusetts. Our state must remain a leader in protecting both students’ right to inclusive books and educators’ freedom to teach.
H.3594/S.2328 directly addresses the alarming national rise in book bans, ensuring every student has the freedom to read books that represent LGBTQ+ voices, communities of color, and honest conversations about race and history. As educators and school leaders, we witness firsthand how access to diverse perspectives supports student growth, empathy, and academic achievement. Limiting that access denies students critical learning opportunities and undermines our responsibility as stewards of public education.
This bill also safeguards the role of public and school librarians—essential professionals who work every day to ensure all young people feel seen and supported in their learning environments. Standing up to censorship is not just a matter of policy—it’s a moral obligation to defend free expression and the integrity of our schools.
Our broader community overwhelmingly supports keeping Massachusetts classrooms open to a wide range of books and ideas. Let’s continue to be a model for inclusive and equitable education by passing this bill and making sure Massachusetts remains a place where all students, educators, and families are respected and protected.
Thank you for your leadership and for joining us in rejecting censorship in favor of a vibrant, inclusive public education system.
