An Open Letter
To: Rep. Fitzgerald, Sen. Johnson, Sen. Baldwin
From: A constituent in Waukesha, WI
April 15
I am a mother of two school-age children, a teacher, and a proud member of my community in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I am extremely concerned about the administration's push to round up and deport immigrants, resistance to correcting errors when they are made, dismissal of due process, and abandonment of legal aid for unaccompanied migrant children. I do believe in creating better paths for people to enter the United States and make it their permanent home. Our current systems for this have been broken for some time and absolutely need addressing. However, to demonize the people who are here, label them as a group as criminals or scapegoat them for all our problems is not a solution. It is a distraction from the true problems and it is fear-mongering at its worst. The most concerning aspect of this, though, is how it is being done far too quickly and without due process. This is highlighted by cases such as Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who the administration itself admitted was deported to El Salvador due to a clerical error. This is outrageous and a failure of our systems. For the administration to then say they cannot do anything about it -- that this person they sent to prison in another country illegally cannot be brought home -- brings shame upon all of us. Additionally, for us to be promoting and partnering with a government such as El Salvador's President Bukele, who is also rounding up thousands of his own citizens in similar disregard for due process or human rights, is shameful. I do not approve the use of my tax money to send people to prisons in El Salvador without due process or to help this country build new prisons. Call out today for Abrego Garcia to be brought home immediately to his family, with full apologies from our government. Speak up for due process for all people in our nation, which is a right and an expectation for all of us who live here. Speak up for the most vulnerable among us, such as minors, who should receive our help and protection. I do not support anyone -- whether it is the person making these decisions or you as my representation remaining silent -- who would stand by and watch this happen. Thank you for being the voice of all Americans and for those of us in Wisconsin who voted for you, who trust in you to do what is right.
