Protect the 1st Amendment Rights of our Students

To: Gov. Abbott, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Sen. Schwertner, Rep. Harris Davila

From: A constituent in Leander, TX

October 2, 2025

This is not a polite reminder—it is a demand. Forcing every Texas public classroom to display the Christian Ten Commandments is not just wrong, it is a brazen violation of the United States Constitution. You are attempting to rewrite history, erase rights, and trample the freedoms of millions of Texas students. Let me be crystal clear: the First Amendment applies to every single Texas student, every single day, in every single public school. The Establishment Clause prohibits government from imposing religion, and you know it. You are not only crossing the line—you are obliterating it. The Supreme Court has already spoken: • Stone v. Graham (1980): Struck down a Kentucky law requiring the Ten Commandments in public classrooms. The Court ruled such displays served no secular purpose and were purely religious indoctrination. • Engel v. Vitale (1962): Banned state-sponsored prayer in schools—even when labeled “voluntary.” The Court held that government cannot promote a religious practice. • Abington School District v. Schempp (1963): Outlawed mandatory Bible readings in public schools because they violated students’ rights. How many times must the highest court in the land tell you the same thing? Public schools are not churches. Teachers are not pastors. Children are not pawns for your religious agenda. You are forcing every non-Christian student—Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, atheist, and more—to sit under state-imposed Christian scripture. That is religious coercion, plain and simple. It does not protect religious freedom. It destroys it. What you are doing is not about faith—it’s about power. You are weaponizing religion to score political points and dragging children into the fight. And in doing so, you are mocking the very Constitution you swore an oath to uphold. This reckless law will not survive judicial review. The courts will strike it down just as they have every other attempt to use government schools as pulpits. And when they do, history will remember that you wasted taxpayer money, divided communities, and made Texas a national embarrassment—all for a stunt that the Supreme Court settled decades ago. The First Amendment is not optional. The Constitution is not a suggestion. You do not get to pick and choose which rights apply to Texans. Stop this unconstitutional power grab. End the mandate. Obey the law of the land. The eyes of the nation are on Texas. Do the right thing before the courts—and history—humiliate you.
