Todd Blanche must be investigated immediately, and his confirmation as permanent Attorney General should be blocked until that investigation is complete. A policy quietly signed on May 6 by Bureau of Prisons Director William K. Marshall III hands the Attorney General unchecked authority to transfer any federal prisoner to any facility in the country — with no public explanation and no accountability.
This isn't abstract. Blanche already transferred convicted child sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell to a minimum-security prison following a private meeting, a move former DOJ Pardon Attorney Liz Oyer says violated existing rules. Now that new policy appears designed to retroactively legitimize exactly that kind of politically motivated transfer. The same power could be used to punish political enemies with maximum-security placements or reward allies with house arrest — and nothing in this policy stops it.
The Senate confirmation process is the last check available here. Blanche should not be confirmed while these questions remain unanswered. Demand a full investigation into the Maxwell transfer, the origins of this policy, and whether President Trump directed any of it.
