An Open Letter
To: Rep. Nunn, Sen. Grassley, Sen. Ernst
From: A verified voter in Des Moines, IA
October 31
**What Are You Doing to Keep Our Ballots in the Hands of Voters?** The midterms are almost here, and I am asking you to publicly defend them. Tell me, on the record, what you are doing to stop anyone from using federal agents, troops, or weak fraud allegations as a pretext to seize ballots or voting equipment or interfere with counting. The president has not announced a plan to do this, but his words concern me. In January he told The New York Times he regrets not ordering the National Guard to seize voting machines after 2020, NBC News reported, and the Christian Science Monitor reports he has declined to rule out sending the Guard or ICE to polling places. He has also kept a third term alive, telling NBC News in 2025 he was not joking about it and saying at an Iowa rally in October he has the "right to run again" while acknowledging the law appears to bar him. The Pentagon says it has no such plans, but a letter is not a binding commitment. The Brennan Center's tracker shows the Justice Department has sued 30 states and Washington, D.C., over voter information. NPR reported that on January 28 the FBI used a warrant to remove about 650 boxes of 2020 election materials from Fulton County, Georgia. The Associated Press reported that the Ninth Circuit rejected the Justice Department's bid to make California set aside ballots tied to roughly 20,000 people it alleges may be noncitizens. This is a pattern. This is not partisan. The Ninth Circuit majority included Judge Mark Bennett, a Trump appointee, and Judge Gabriel Sanchez, a Biden appointee. I am 63 years old, and I have never missed an election. I have always expected my ballot to be counted once, as I cast it. I do not want to wonder whether soldiers or federal agents could pull anyone's vote from the count. I am asking you to: 1. State publicly that you oppose any use of federal agents or troops to seize ballots, voting equipment, or election materials, or to deploy to polling places, before certification is complete, and that you stand by the Constitution's two-term limit. 2. Co-sponsor the Voting Systems Protection Act, H.R. 9349 (Reps. Dan Goldman and Yassamin Ansari, June 18, 2026), which would generally bar federal seizure of election materials for 120 days before and after an election, or introduce a Senate companion. 3. Use your oversight authority to demand written, binding commitments from the Secretary of Defense and Attorney General Blanche that troops and federal agents will not seize ballots or voting equipment, to hold FBI Director Kash Patel to his sworn September 15 commitment to the same, and to demand hearings on the Fulton County warrant. So what are you doing to keep our ballots in the hands of voters? Yes or no: will you state publicly, before Election Day, that you oppose any use of troops or federal agents to seize our ballots? Our elections belong to the voters, not to anyone hunting for a pretext. Thank you for defending every voter's right to be counted.
