Demand Action After Austin Police Kill 17-Year-Old
To: Rep. Cole, Sen. Eckhardt
From: A constituent in Manor, TX
July 27
A 17-year-old is dead, killed by Austin police officers, and I want to know exactly what you plan to do to make sure this never happens again. Not a statement. Not a task force. Concrete policy changes, accountability measures, and a public timeline for delivering them.
This is not an isolated incident. Black people in this country are killed by police at a disproportionate rate, and Austin is not exempt from that pattern. The council members calling for transparency are right to do so, but transparency alone is not justice. I want to see you push for independent oversight with real disciplinary power, mandatory de-escalation requirements, and a serious reckoning with how this department is trained, funded, and held accountable when officers take a life.
What specific steps will you take, and by when? I am watching how you respond to this moment, and so is this community.
