Oppose Christian nationalist K-5 curriculum undermining public education

To: Rep. Shine, Gov. Abbott, Sen. Flores, Lt. Gov. Patrick

From: A constituent in Harker Heights, TX

December 1

The new "Bluebonnet Learning K-5 Reading Language Arts" curriculum approved in Texas is deeply flawed and inappropriate for educating children. It sacrifices crucial reading instruction time to indoctrinate students with a Christian nationalist ideology that misrepresents American history and promotes specific religious beliefs. The curriculum cuts student reading practice in half, replacing it with lectures pushing narratives like the false claim that the United States was founded as a Christian nation. It obscures the roles of Enlightenment values and non-Christian influences in the nation's founding. Lessons present the Bible as a history and science textbook, including biblical figures alongside historical ones without differentiation. The heavy infusion of Protestant theology is excessive for a public school curriculum obligated to maintain neutrality on religion. Foundational texts like Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from Birmingham Jail" are mangled beyond recognition. Overall, the curriculum fails at its core purpose of teaching children reading skills and literacy. It must be rejected to uphold robust public education that accurately represents humanity's shared story and equips students with essential learning abilities. All Texans must oppose this dangerous and flawed attempt to indoctrinate our children.
