Oppose HJ Res 140

To: Sen. Hickenlooper, Sen. Bennet

From: A constituent in Aurora, CO

January 22

Dear Senator, I am writing to urge you to oppose H.J. Res. 140, which would nullify Public Land Order 7917 and reopen over 225,000 acres of Minnesota’s Superior National Forest to mineral and geothermal leasing. This resolution would reverse critical protections for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and the surrounding watershed. The 20-year withdrawal that was put in place protects the Rainy River Watershed, one of America’s most pristine wilderness areas, from the potential damage of sulfide-ore copper mining—an industry with a well-documented history of causing irreversible water contamination. The Boundary Waters is not only the most visited wilderness area in the United States, but also an irreplaceable natural treasure that supports recreation, tourism, and the cultural heritage of the Lake Superior Chippewa. Once this ecosystem is damaged by mining pollution, it cannot be restored. I am particularly concerned that this Congressional Review Act resolution would set a dangerous precedent, allowing Congress to retroactively overturn land management decisions and undermining the stability of public land protections across the country. I understand the importance of domestic mineral production, but there are responsible ways to pursue these resources that do not jeopardize our most treasured wilderness areas and the communities that depend on clean water. I respectfully ask that you oppose H.J. Res. 140 and protect the Boundary Waters for current and future generations. Thank you for your consideration of my views.
