What happens when a National Guard member shoots an American civilian?

To: Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn, Rep. Van Duyne

From: A constituent in Dallas, TX

August 28, 2025

I’m writing to demand that you condemn this Republican administration’s deployment of National Guard troops to conduct civilian law enforcement in U.S. cities. Using the military to police American civilians is a costly abuse of power designed to scare communities and silence dissent. It must be immediately rejected. It amounts to a military occupation of our cities. National Guard members are not trained in domestic policing. The Guard is trained to fight our enemies. The police serve and protect the American people. When we have the military in the role of the police, the American people are at risk of becoming the enemies. What happens when a National Guard member shoots an American civilian? My wife and I strongly urge you to do everything in your power to remove all National Guard troops from the civilian policing roles this Republican administration has placed them in.
