I’m calling on to reject HR 9495. As the bill currently stands, it would give the Executive Branch new powers that are ripe for abuse. profit media outlets, and political opponents. With the inclusion of the language from HR 6408 in HR 9495, any Secretary of the Treasury would have a dangerous new tool to curb free speech, censor non It would also allow the IRS to target and harass domestic non-profits. This is absolutely not the type of precedent we want to be setting. More to the point, there is already a federal stature that makes it illegal for non-profit groups to fund terrorist groups. This would be reinventing the wheel, and for purposes that clearly appear to be about helping the Executive Branch consolidate further powers.
