Stand Up for Pride Month and LGBTQ+ Families

To: Gov. Whitmer, Rep. Andrews, Sen. Nesbitt

From: A verified voter in Stevensville, MI

April 14

I need you to publicly defend Pride Month and oppose any efforts to erase LGBTQ+ families through discriminatory resolutions like Tennessee's House Joint Resolution 182. Last week, Tennessee designated June as "Nuclear Family Month" in a deliberate attempt to erase same-sex couples during Pride Month. The resolution defines family as "one husband, one wife, and any biological, adopted, or fostered children," explicitly excluding same-sex parents while claiming this structure is "God's design." It uses misleading statistics about "fatherless families" to suggest children of same-sex couples face disadvantages, despite research consistently showing otherwise. This isn't isolated to Tennessee. Republicans nationwide are using the same rhetoric to justify discrimination, claiming "the nuclear family is under attack" while actually attacking LGBTQ+ families. Tennessee's House already passed a bill allowing businesses to ignore same-sex marriage licenses. Thousands of LGBTQ+ families deserve recognition and respect, not erasure. Stand up for Pride Month. Make clear that all families, regardless of who their parents love, deserve equal dignity under the law.
