As a constituent who values both the rule of law and America's reputation as a welcoming destination for global investment, I'm writing to express concern over the recent ICE raid at the Hyundai-LG battery plant in Georgia.
While I understand the importance of enforcing visa regulations, the decision to detain and publicly humiliate hundreds of South Korean workers-many of whom believed they were operating within legal bounds-strikes me as counterproductiv e. These individuals were not undocumented in the traditional sense; they were caught in a web of subcontractor mismanagement and visa ambiguity. I believe there was a better way.
Rather than a militarized raid, the federal government could have:
- Contacted Hyundai and its partners to clarify visa discrepancies
- Levied fines against the companies responsible for misclassification
- Offered a grace period for workers to adjust their status - Collaborated with South Korea to preserve diplomatic trust
This approach would have upheld our laws while preserving dignity, protecting bilateral relations, and encouraging continued investment in American manufacturing. I urge you to consider legislative solutions-such as streamlined visa categories for allied industrial projects-and to advocate for enforcement practices that reflect both strength and wisdom.
Thank you for your service and for considering this perspective.
