I support the No Secret Police Act

To: Sen. Wiener, Gov. Newsom, Asm. Haney

From: A verified voter in San Francisco, CA

June 17

Senators Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Jesse Arreguin (D-Berkeley) introduced SB 627, the No Secret Police Act. The bill prohibits law enforcement at all levels from covering their faces while conducting operations in the state of California. The bill also requires officers to be identifiable via their uniform, whether with name or other identifier. As the Trump Administration expands the use of secret police tactics, SB 627 boosts transparency and supports public safety by bolstering public trust in law enforcement.  Senator Weiner said, “We are seeing more and more law enforcement officers, particularly at the federal level, covering their faces entirely, not identifying themselves at all and, at times, even wearing army fatigues where we can’t tell if these are law enforcement officers or a vigilante militia,” Wiener said. I support the No Secret Police Act. The public needs to know the difference between legitimate officers or individuals impersonating them. This is an urgent public safety and civil rights issue.
