I am a 7th grade science teacher at Ohio Virtual Academy, and I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed bill to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education. This decision would have devastating consequences for students like mine, particularly those with IEPs and those from low-income families.
This year, one-third of my students are on an IEP, and the majority come from impoverished backgrounds. Federal programs like Title I, IDEA (special education funding), and federal charter school grants provide critical support that allows these students to access the education they deserve. Eliminating the Department of Education would put this funding at risk, leaving already vulnerable students without the resources they need to succeed.
Ohio’s students cannot afford to lose this support. I urge you to oppose this bill and stand up for our students and teachers. Please let me know where you stand on this issue. I look forward to your response.
