Please support the Fair Representation Act

To: Rep. Rayner, Sen. Rouson, Gov. DeSantis

From: A verified voter in Saint Petersburg, FL

July 23

Right now, most Americans feel our democracy isn’t working for them. Nearly 9 in 10 Americans say our political system is broken, campaigns are increasingly toxic, and voters want more choices on the ballot. That’s why I’m asking you to support the Fair Representation Act. The Fair Representation Act would give voters more choice with ranked choice voting (RCV) for primary and general elections for the U.S. House and Senate. It would also create multi-member districts in the House, which would stop gerrymandering, make Congress work better, and allow nearly every voter to elect a candidate they support. With RCV, voters have the freedom to vote honestly instead of worrying about playing “spoiler.” And it makes campaigns more positive, since candidates have an incentive to reach out for voters’ second- and third-choice support instead of tearing each other down. Additionally, our single-member districts leave tens of millions of Americans without someone in Congress who they feel represents them. This includes urban Republicans and rural Democrats, as well as many women and communities of color. With multi-member districts, the Fair Representation Act would create more opportunities for Americans across the political spectrum to be represented in Congress – and put an end to the gerrymandering arms race. Multi-member districts would likely elect Members of both major parties, giving elected officials new incentives to work together. Help put “We the People” back at the center of our democracy by supporting the Fair Representation Act.
